Phoebe and Zoey’s Tale

These two girls are nine and ten years old, mother and daughter, together all their lives. They were turned into the Dawson Creek SPCA by their owner. When we were contacted by the Spca for help with ZP we had no foster homes available and eventually they were transferred to the Quesnel Spca who continued a dialogue with us.

After placing an ad in the newspaper for foster homes we agreed to take the girls. It was unfortunate but it appeared that they would have to be separated into different homes. As happens in rescue due to the volatile nature of the business, one of the foster homes did not work out and we had to scramble to find a spot for one of them. The lovely Martha in Chilliwack offered to take them temporarily and the plan was to move one of them into the one screened foster home available.

After some discussion with Martha, she decided to foster them both for TnT so that they wouldn’t have to be split up – and the girls are so happy living on the farm.

The health of these girls was just nasty; although they were spayed there were multiple heath issues. The coat and skin were of course in terrible condition. And the teeth !

Phoebe had open lesions on her body, her tail was cracked open in an ugly gash. Her ears were blocked by skin knobs at the opening and no air was able to go down the ear tube, she is now deaf due to previous neglect. She required entropian surgery and at the same time had two lumps removed from her body. An aspirate determined that the lumps were benign fatty tissue so it was safe to do so. Her ear knobs were removed with laser surgery so that air can now travel down the ear canal. She also had a major dental as her many rotten teeth were making her ill.

Zoey’s ear drum is badly scarred by untreated ear infections and paws crossed this hasn’t travelled to the inner ear. This little doll didn’t have a single tooth in her head that wasn’t rotten, and so she had to have all her teeth removed. The antibiotics she was on did not cure the ear and nose infection, so there is still some sort of infection in her nasal passages and ears. Swabs were taken of her nasal discharge and also the ears so that we know what antibiotics will work on her. She is now back in the hospital for round 2 of surgeries where she will have entropian surgery and a look in the ear to see how best to treat it.

Phoebe is with her buddy for round 2 where her ears will be looked at again.

All this treatment came with a price tag of course. The first surgeries have come in with a total of over $5,000. The second surgeries have amounted to another $1,200.

Our commitment to the girls is unwavering; they deserve a chance at a pain free life for whatever time is left to them.

We are desperately in need of funds to help the dogs in our care; the cost of treatment has exceeded our budget by far. If you are able to contribute any amount no matter how small, it will help the dogs have a bright future.

In our effort to help raise the funds for Phoebe's surgery we hope to actually exceed this goal and we feel this might be a good way to start off the holiday baking season.
